At the heart of SVAN is a magneto-mechanical sensor that continuously reads resistance as the needle advances.

The instant the needle breaks through the cortex into the marrow cavity, the sensor detects the spring-back and halts insertion — automatically, independent of needle length or operator technique. What clinicians once judged by feel, SVAN measures. This is what makes safe intraosseous access possible in a 500 g neonate, where the margin for error is fractions of a millimetre.
